In 2000, Rein Lander founded the Pallieter Foundation. The name is derived from a book by Felix Timmermans about Pallieter, a true bon vivant. One can also ‘pallieteren,’ carefreely and exuberantly enjoying nature while taking a leisurely walk. Isn’t this the silent wish of everyone?”
The Pallieter Foundation, staffed exclusively by volunteers, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for severely, incurably, or chronically ill children and children with disabilities. We advocate for the well-being of the child (while keeping the family in mind) and strive to provide the ‘extras’ that cannot be covered by regular (care) budgets. Our slogan, “Pallieter, close to the family and the sick child,” is not without reason.
A small foundation, but through connection and collaboration, by pooling our strengths, we are capable of achieving a lot. Our most significant project was the realization of the Pallieterburght children’s hospice in Capelle aan den IJssel, which is now entirely self-sufficient and independent and is currently named De Groene Burcht. We collaborate with Villa Pardoes, a fairytale-like holiday residence for families with seriously ill children, and we have a close relationship with the Kruimeltje Foundation. Rein came up with the name “Kruimeltje” for the foundation, reflecting on his own childhood and the recognizable three qualities of the Rotterdam street urchin Kruimeltje: humor, joy of life, and perseverance.
Thanks to the support of many, we have been able to contribute to various initiatives, including creating a “healing environment” and providing development-oriented materials for CityKids, organizing special days at the Isala Theater, installing a projection system in the waiting room for children at the IJsselland Hospital, and much more.
Unfortunately, Rein passed away in 2018. His greatest wish was for the Pallieter Foundation to continue to exist even after his passing, so that it could continue to fulfill quiet, yet often necessary wishes, and bring more joy to the lives of seriously ill and disabled children. What is more beautiful than the laughter of a child?
